Bus compression is the processor most likely to be doing damage nobody can name. Two decibels of gain reduction on the stereo bus with a fast attack takes the front off every drum hit in the song; a release that is too short makes the whole mix breathe in time with the kick. Both are audible, both get described as "it just sounds a bit small", and both are invisible on a meter that only shows the gain reduction needle moving a little.

The drill above trains the failure everyone eventually learns to hear: pumping, where the compressor is releasing audibly between hits. Once you can catch it, the settings stop being folklore. The cards cover the working rules: slow attack to keep transients, release timed to the song, one or two decibels of reduction on a bus, mixing into the compressor from the start rather than bolting it on at the end, gain staging so the bus is not already hot, and the cases where the right amount of bus compression is none.

    Mix Bus Compression: Gentle Glue

    Mix bus "glue" compression is gentle by design, a low ratio (2:1), a slow attack (10-30 ms), auto or medium release, and only 1-2 dB of gain reduction. The goal is cohesion: the mix should feel more unified, not audibly compressed. The SSL G-Series bus compressor is the iconic model, its fast, transparent VCA topology made it the most-imitated piece of studio hardware.

    In practice: A bluegrass mix where adding bus compression robbed the banjo of its snap: the attack is too fast, slow it to 20-30 ms so transients pass, and keep gain reduction to 1-2 dB.

    Mix Bus Attack Time: Preserving Transients

    A slow attack (10-30 ms) on the bus compressor is critical for acoustic music. It lets the initial transients, pick attacks, bow strokes, plucks, vocal consonants: pass through before the compressor engages, preserving the articulation and life of the instruments. A fast attack catches and reduces those transients, flattening the mix. In bluegrass, the transients are the music.

    In practice: A/B-ing 3 ms vs 30 ms attack: the 3 ms sounds "smoother" only because it is eating every pick and chop transient, choose 30 ms so the drive survives.

    Mix Bus Chain Order

    The standard mix bus chain runs EQ → compression → saturation → limiter. EQ first, so the tonal shaping influences what the compressor reacts to. Compression next for dynamic glue. Saturation for harmonic warmth. A limiter last as a safety net for peaks. EQ before compression is deliberate: it ensures your tonal changes shape the compressor's behavior on purpose rather than letting it react to imbalances you are about to fix.

    In practice: Setting a bluegrass mix bus chain: Pultec EQ, then SSL compressor, then tape saturation, then a limiter, and every element barely working.

    Mixing Into the Bus Compressor

    Mixing "into" the bus compressor means placing it on the mix bus before you start mixing, so every fader move and processing decision is made while hearing the compressor's effect. It matters because the compressor reacts differently as you add instruments and change levels. Add it after the mix is balanced and it shifts all those balances, undoing your work.

    In practice: Starting a mix: insert the bus compressor first, then build the balance through it, rather than perfecting the balance and then having the compressor rearrange it.

    Gain Staging the Mix Bus

    Analog-modelled bus plugins are calibrated so that -18 dBFS corresponds to 0 VU on the hardware they model. That is an AVERAGE level, measured on a steady tone, not a peak level. So aim for an average of about -18 dBFS on the mix bus. Music with a normal crest factor runs 12 to 18 dB above its average, so that leaves peaks somewhere around -10 to -6 dBFS with plenty of headroom left. Both errors are common. Too hot and the compressor and saturator overreact and sound harsh. Too quiet, which is what happens if you set the PEAKS to -18, and they barely engage: the average lands near -32 dBFS and the plugins do almost nothing while you turn their knobs up wondering why.

    In practice: An SSL bus comp and tape plugin sounding harsh at gentle settings: the bus averages around -9 dBFS. Pull the faders down collectively until the average reads -18 and the peaks land near -8, and they smooth out.

    The -18 dBFS calibration is an AVERAGE, not a peak. Average about -18 dBFS, peaks near -10 to -6.

    When NOT to Bus Compress

    Bus compression is not always appropriate. Very dynamic acoustic performances, solo classical guitar, an intimate vocal-guitar duet, classical recordings: often sound best with none. The natural dynamics are the artistic intent. Solo performances also lack the frequency density a bus compressor responds to well, so it may pump awkwardly on single-instrument transients. Sometimes the right move is no compressor.

    In practice: A solo classical guitar recording: skip bus compression entirely, the dynamic swing from pianissimo to fortissimo is the performance.

    VCA Groups vs Bus Compression

    A VCA group and a subgroup look similar but differ in what they do to audio. A VCA group controls multiple fader levels remotely, no audio is summed, so each channel keeps its own processing chain. A subgroup (bus) sums audio from multiple channels to a shared bus, where you can apply group processing, compression, EQ: that affects all of them together. Use a VCA to ride levels; use a subgroup when you want shared processing.

    In practice: Wanting to ride all drum levels at once without changing their processing: a VCA group. Wanting one compressor across the whole drum bus: a subgroup.

    Parallel Mix Bus Compression

    Parallel mix bus compression sends a copy of the mix bus to a heavily compressed aux (10:1+, fast attack and release), then blends that squashed signal underneath the original uncompressed mix. The payoff: added density and energy without sacrificing the natural dynamics and transients of the original mix, the punch of heavy compression without the squash.

    In practice: A mix that needs more punch but heavy bus compression kills the dynamics: blend a crushed parallel copy under the dry mix instead, energy added, transients intact.

    SSL Bus Compressor

    The SSL Bus Compressor is the standard mix-bus "glue" compressor, a clean VCA design that pushes a whole mix together so separate tracks feel like one performance. The classic starting point: 4:1 ratio, slow attack (so transients pass), auto release, and just 2-4 dB of gain reduction. The technique is to mix into it from the start, so every balance decision is made with the glue already working.

    In practice: A session recording where the instruments sound like separate tracks: an SSL bus comp at 4:1, slow attack, a few dB of reduction makes them feel like a band in one room.
