Gain Structure / Signal Flow
Signal in a live channel flows in a fixed order: the microphone feeds the preamp, which sets the initial working level; then it passes through EQ and dynamics, then the fader for mix level, and finally out to a bus and the mains. Getting level right means setting it at the right stage.
The preamp (trim/gain) sets how hot the signal is, that is where you establish a healthy level. The fader is only for mixing. Confusing the two is the most common live-sound level mistake.
In practice: A vocal is distorting with the fader only at unity. The fader is not the cause, the preamp is too hot and clipping before the signal ever reaches the fader. Pull the trim back.

Preamp Gain vs Channel Fader: Set the Preamp First
Preamp gain and channel fader are different tools. The preamp determines signal-to-noise ratio at the very front of the signal chain. The channel fader sets relative mix balance. New engineers often treat the fader as the gain control, pulling channels past unity to make them louder, which just amplifies the noise floor along with the signal.
The discipline: set the preamp first so peaks read around -18 to -12 dBFS on the channel meter (PFL the channel to see real level). Then the fader rides around unity for mix balance. If a channel needs to be ridden far above or below unity to feel right, revisit the preamp.
In practice: Vocal too quiet at unity fader: do not push fader past unity. PFL the channel, push preamp gain until peaks hit -18 to -12 dBFS, return fader to unity. Real gain, not amplified noise.

System Gain Structure: Console to Speaker
System gain structure is making every device from console to amp run at its nominal level with consistent headroom. The console output should match the amplifier's input sensitivity; amp gains should be set so limiters engage just before the speakers' limits.
The deliberate goal: if anything clips, it should be the console, where you can hear and fix it, never the amplifiers downstream.
In practice: Harsh distortion at moderate volume with the console showing healthy headroom and no amp clip lights: the problem is mid-chain, DSP clipping or a sensitivity mismatch, work backward from the speakers.
Set every stage to nominal level with headroom, the console should clip first, not the amps.

PFL / Solo
PFL: Pre-Fader Listen: routes a channel's signal to your headphones before the fader, so you can hear it in isolation without changing anything the audience hears.
That makes it the core live troubleshooting tool: solo a channel to check its gain, find a buzz, or verify signal, all silently while the show continues.
In practice: A buzz in the mains with no obvious source: PFL each suspect channel, DIs and long cable runs first, until you hear the buzz alone, then fix that channel without the audience noticing.
PFL hears a channel pre-fader in your headphones, isolate and troubleshoot without touching the mix.

Aux Sends: Pre vs Post Fader
An aux send taps a channel's signal to a separate bus, and where it taps matters. A pre-fader send takes the signal before the fader, so it stays constant no matter what you do at front of house, that is why monitor mixes use pre-fader, so a FOH fader move never disturbs what the musician hears. A post-fader send takes the signal after the fader, so it tracks fader moves, that is why effects sends are post-fader, keeping the wet/dry ratio proportional.
In practice: A fiddle monitor that drifts whenever you touch the FOH fader: its send is post-fader by mistake, switch it to pre-fader so the monitor mix stays independent.
Monitor sends pre-fader (constant); effects sends post-fader (track the fader).

Channel Strip Signal Chain Order
A live console channel processes its signal through a fixed chain: input, then the HPF, then EQ, then the insert point (for an outboard compressor or gate), then the fader, and finally out to aux sends and the bus. The order is deliberate, you clean up the signal with the HPF, shape it with EQ, process it at the insert, then set its level with the fader.
One detail decides a lot of behavior: where aux sends tap the signal. Pre-fader sends tap before the fader; post-fader sends tap after it and follow every fader move.
In practice: Because the insert sits before the fader, an inserted compressor reacts to the gained, EQ'd signal, not to your fader position, so riding the fader will not change how hard it compresses.
Input → HPF → EQ → insert → fader → sends.

HPF on Everything
A high-pass filter (HPF) removes the lowest frequencies from a channel. In live sound you engage it on nearly every channel, vocals, guitars, fiddle, even kick and bass set just below their useful range, because almost no source needs that sub-low energy, but every channel picks some up: stage rumble, foot noise, mic handling, HVAC, wind.
On its own each channel's low junk is small. Across a whole console it sums into a muddy mess that eats headroom. The HPF stops that buildup before it starts.
In practice: The mains sound muddy even though every instrument sounds clean soloed. That is low-frequency buildup across unfiltered channels, engage HPFs on all of them and the mix clears up.

Gain Before Feedback
Gain before feedback is how much level you can get out of a system before it howls, and it is a budget you can actively increase. The biggest lever is mic placement: a mic close to its source needs far less system gain, which buys enormous feedback margin. Beyond that: use more directional mic patterns, move speakers away from mics, keep unused mics muted (every open mic costs you), and notch the worst frequencies.
Note what does not help: turning the monitor up. That raises loop gain, it spends the budget, it does not grow it.
In practice: A performer cannot hear themselves and you are already near feedback. Do not push the send, move their mic closer to their mouth or instrument so it needs less gain to begin with.
Close mics and tight patterns buy margin; turning up spends it.
