The Standard Soundcheck Sequence
Soundcheck is the most-repeated workflow of a live engineer's career. Doing it in the same order every time is what lets you finish in 45 minutes instead of two hours.
The standard sequence: line check first (verify every input has signal), then build the kit channel by channel starting at the kick, then bass, then guitars/keys, then vocals last. Build each performer's monitor mix one at a time, ring out each wedge, then play a band-played song to polish FOH. Vocalists get the most monitor attention because they are the most exposed.
Deviating from the sequence is what causes runs to drag, you skip line check, half an hour later you find a dead channel, now you are debugging during the artist's patience window instead of before.
In practice: A confident crew can soundcheck a four-piece in 45 minutes flat by holding to the sequence: line check, kit-up, instruments, vocals, monitors one performer at a time, then a played song.
Same order every time. Line check first, vocals built last, played song at the end.

Line Check: Verifying Every Input Before Anyone Plays
Before any musician touches an instrument, the stage tech walks the inputs and FOH confirms signal. The tech taps each mic ("Snare top!" *tap tap*) and scratches each DI cable. FOH confirms: "Snare top, channel 4, signal good." Any mis-patch is found and fixed now, before the band is standing around losing patience.
Skipping line check is the single most common cause of "we ran out of time at soundcheck." A buried mis-patch, kick to a muted channel, snare bottom and snare top swapped, is invisible until you try to mix it, and by then the band wants to play, not wait while you debug.
In practice: Talkback open: tech taps kick, "channel 1, good." Scratches bass DI: "channel 7, but it's panned hard left at the desk, fixing." Tap-tap up the kit. 4 minutes total. Saves an hour.
Tap, scratch, confirm. Every channel. Before anyone plays.

Building Monitor Mixes in the Right Order
Monitor mixes get built one performer at a time, in priority order. Lead vocalist first because they are the most exposed, they can hear themselves dropping pitch if their mix is wrong, and the audience hears every flaw. Then backing vocalists for the same reason. Then the rhythm section because they need to lock together. Then everyone else.
The alternative, "everyone play and tell me what you need": is monitor-world chaos. Five people pointing at things at once, no one's mix gets done, soundcheck drags. Build them one at a time, with focused attention.
In practice: Lead singer's mix: just her voice in her wedge first. Confirm she can hear herself. Then add her guitar, then the rhythm section underneath, then a touch of the other singers. 3 minutes. Next performer.
Vocals first, rhythm next, others last. One performer at a time.

Talkback Etiquette: Short, Specific, Off When Done
Talkback flows from FOH to stage when held. Hold it longer than needed and the band hears every word at FOH, your assistant's side comments, your phone, the runner asking about food. The discipline is: press to speak, say one short specific thing, release.
At monitor world it is even more important, a held talkback in a wedge can drown out a performer's own mix. "Hey Sarah, can you sing a bit louder for me" with talkback held the whole time is the wrong move; press, speak, release.
In practice: "Sarah, sing the chorus for me." [release] [she sings] [press] "More?" [release] [she nods] [press] "Good, got it. Drummer, kick four on the floor please." [release]
Press, speak, release. Don't flood stage with FOH noise.

When You Have 15 Minutes: The Quick Soundcheck
A festival changeover does not allow a full soundcheck, you have 15 minutes. The protocol changes: line check is faster (channels are ticked off, not built), the played-song polish is skipped, monitor mixes get a minimum-viable build, and you rely on recalled scenes from prior soundchecks where possible.
Doing it well requires giving up the perfectionism that a 90-minute soundcheck allows. You are not finding the perfect mix; you are surviving the changeover and trusting that the channel-by-channel work was done in pre-production.
In practice: 15-minute changeover: 2 min line check, 5 min gain pass, 5 min minimum monitor builds, 3 min buffer. Doors.
No played song, minimum monitors, recall scenes if you can. Survive, don't perfect.

Pre-Soundcheck Recall: Walking In With a Starting Point
A touring engineer saves a scene at the end of every gig with the act's last known-good gain, EQ, comp, monitor sends, and routing. The next gig, they recall it before soundcheck, the channels come up at the right starting point, not at zero. Soundcheck becomes adjustment, not construction.
The trap: the venue PA, the wedges, the room are different, so the recalled scene is a starting point, not a finished mix. Engineers who skip soundcheck because "the scene is recalled" find the mix wrong from the first song. Recall, then adjust to the new room.
In practice: Recall scene "Acoustic Trio: last good". Channels come up: vocal mic at gain 35, HPF 100, comp 3:1, wedge send -10dB. Now you adjust for tonight's wedge and room, not build from scratch.
Recall the scene for a starting point. Then soundcheck the room.

The Played-Song Pass: Polish, Don't Rebuild
The played-song pass is polish, not rebuild. By the time the band plays a full song, FOH should already have a working balance from the channel-by-channel build. The played song is when you confirm vocals sit, the bass and kick aren't fighting, the guitar isn't masking the snare, and you make notes ("ride vocal up in chorus", "kill ride cymbal in the bridge") for showtime.
If you arrive at the played song with nothing built yet, you have skipped the channel-by-channel work and you will not finish. Build first, polish at the end.
In practice: Song plays. Vocal is buried in the chorus when everyone hits, push vocal +2dB on the chorus, note the cue. Kick and bass overlap at 80Hz, narrow EQ cut on the bass. Done with notes; ready for showtime.
Played song = polish. Channel-by-channel build is the actual mixing.

Walk the Room: The Mix Position Is One Seat
Engineers mix from a position chosen by whoever built the venue, and it is regularly a bad seat: under a balcony, on a riser sitting in a null, dead centre where the two hangs sum in a way they do nowhere else, or so far back it has no idea what the front rows are hearing.
Almost everything that matters is position dependent. Low-end response swings hardest, because room modes make bass a different amount at every spot. Intelligibility falls off past critical distance and under overhangs. Coverage runs out at the edges, and the two sides of a system are matched less often than people assume. The front rows may be hearing mostly stage rather than PA.
So walk, with material you know well, and make each stop a specific test rather than a general listen: front rows, centre floor, both edges, back wall, under the balcony, and the region between a fill and the mains where a bad alignment shows up as a smeared arrival.
Then walk it again during the opening act, because the empty-room walk was a rehearsal and occupancy changes every answer.
In practice: A mix that is excellent at the desk and hollow under the balcony: the desk never told you, because the balcony seats are the one place the mix position cannot hear.
The mix position is one seat and often an unrepresentative one. Walk the room with known material, test each area for something specific, and walk it again once it is full.

When You Lose the Soundcheck: Triage Order
Soundchecks get taken away regularly, and the engineers who survive it are not faster, they are better at sorting. The sorting question is a single one: can this be fixed once the show has started.
Things that cannot go first. Verifying that every input exists and lands on the channel you believe it does, because a wrong patch or a dead channel becomes a hole in the show rather than an adjustment. Gain structure with real headroom, because the band will play louder in front of an audience than in an empty room and a clipped preamp is unrecoverable. And a working lead vocal in the monitors, because a performer who cannot hear themselves changes what they do, and that corrupts the source you will be mixing for the rest of the night.
Everything else can be built live. Tone, balance, effects and refinement all happen perfectly well during the first two songs. It feels exposed and it is completely survivable, and the audience does not notice a mix being assembled nearly as much as engineers assume.
The last step is communication. Tell the band exactly what you got to and what you did not, and ask them to report monitor problems in the first song rather than saving them up.
In practice: Ten minutes instead of an hour: line check, gain with headroom, lead vocal in the wedges, confirm talkback. Then stop. Kick drum tone gets built during song two.
Sort by what cannot be fixed once the show starts: patch, gain and the vocal monitor. Tone and balance are built live, and that is fine.

Sound Check Procedure
A soundcheck works best in a fixed order, narrow to wide. First a line check: confirm every channel actually has signal and is patched correctly. Then each instrument alone, to set gain, HPF, and basic EQ. Then monitors, building each performer's mix. Finally the full band together, where you balance the front-of-house mix.
The order matters because each stage depends on the last, you cannot balance a band whose individual channels are not gained, and you cannot gain a channel that is not even patched.
In practice: Twenty minutes for a five-piece: roughly 3 for the line check, 7 for individual channels, 7 for monitors, 3 for the full band. Start every stage with the lead vocal.
Line check → individual → monitors → full band.
