A Channel Died Mid-Song: The 30-Second Diagnosis Tree

A working signal-flow troubleshooting order for live sound: what to check, in what sequence, when an input goes silent with an audience watching.

Hear the relationship

A channel goes silent in the middle of a song. You have maybe 30 seconds before it becomes obvious to the audience, and the wrong move is to start randomly touching things. Signal flow troubleshooting is a binary search, and the reason experienced engineers look fast is not that they know more causes. It is that they check in an order that eliminates half the signal chain at a time.

The principle: find where signal stops, not what is broken. You do not need to know the cause to restore audio. You need to know the last point where signal exists and the first point where it does not. Everything between those two points is the problem, and often you can route around it in seconds and diagnose properly after the set.

Check the console first, because it is in front of you and costs no walking. Is the channel metering? If the meter is moving, the signal is arriving and the problem is downstream: a muted channel, a fader at the bottom, a mute group, a DCA pulled down, a wrong bus assignment, or a scene recall that changed something. Downstream problems are the most common and the fastest to fix, which is why they get checked first.

If the meter is dead, signal is not arriving, and the problem is upstream of the console. Now the search moves to the stage, and the next question is whether it is the source or the path. The fastest test is a swap: patch the suspect input into a channel you know works, or patch a source you know works into the suspect channel. One swap tells you which side of the console the fault is on.

Upstream, in likelihood order: the cable, the connector, the mic or DI, the phantom power, the stage box channel, the snake or network path. Cables and connectors fail far more often than everything else combined, because they get stepped on, coiled badly, and yanked. Assume cable until proven otherwise. A spare cable in your pocket resolves more show emergencies than any other single object.

Phantom power deserves its own check because it fails silently and confusingly. A condenser mic or an active DI with no phantom produces either nothing or a very weak, thin signal. If a channel that worked at soundcheck is now dead or oddly quiet, and it needs phantom, verify phantom is still on for that channel. Scene recalls turn phantom off more often than anyone admits.

Wireless adds its own branch. A dead wireless channel is usually battery, then RF interference, then a receiver that has lost its pair. Batteries are the answer often enough that a wireless channel dying mid-set should make you think battery before anything clever. This is also why wireless channels get fresh batteries per show rather than per festival.

On a digital or networked system, add one more check: is the routing still what you think? Networked audio moves patch assignments in software, so a channel can be perfectly healthy at the stage box and simply not arriving at the input you are looking at. Check the patch page before you walk to the stage, because a repatch takes seconds and a walk takes minutes.

Prove the result

The route-around is often better than the fix. If a vocal mic dies and there is a spare on stage, moving the singer to the spare mic is faster than diagnosing the dead one. If a guitar DI fails and the amp is mic-ed, ride the mic. Restoring audio is the job during the show. Understanding the failure is the job after the show, and confusing the two is how a 30-second problem becomes a three-minute one.

Practice this away from a show. The diagnosis order is a decision reflex, and reflexes come from repetition rather than from reading. Run the tree in your head against imagined failures: dead vocal, weak DI, one drum mic gone, a whole stage box silent. If you have to think about the order, you do not have it yet.
