Mixing Monitors From Front of House Without a Monitor Engineer

How to build usable wedge mixes from the FOH position when you are the only engineer: send strategy, the requests that matter, and how to avoid feedback you cannot hear.

Hear the relationship

On most shows below a certain size there is no monitor engineer, which means one person is building the audience mix and every performer mix at once, from a position where the performer mixes are barely audible. This is the normal condition for club and regional work, and it has its own technique that is not simply a smaller version of having a monitor world.

The core difficulty is that you cannot hear what you are building. Wedge mixes exist on stage, 40 feet from you, pointed away. You hear a distant blur of them mixed with the PA. So monitor mixing from FOH is done by construction and inference rather than by listening, which means your discipline about what goes into a mix matters much more than your ears do.

Build monitor mixes sparse on purpose. The instinct is to give performers a nice full mix, and it is wrong. Every element added to a wedge adds stage volume, adds bleed into open microphones, and moves that wedge closer to feedback. A wedge should contain what the performer cannot hear acoustically and almost nothing else. A drummer surrounded by drums does not need drums. A guitarist next to their amp does not need guitar.

What people actually need, in order: their own voice, the instrument that keeps them in time (usually kick and bass or a click), and the instrument that keeps them in tune (usually a harmonic instrument or the lead vocal). That is frequently three or four channels. A wedge with twelve channels in it is a wedge that will feed back and that nobody can hear themselves in anyway.

Test one move

Pre-fader sends are not optional. Monitor sends must be pre-fader so that your FOH fader moves do not change what performers hear. If your sends are post-fader, pulling a guitar down in the house also pulls it out of the guitarist wedge mid-song, which is exactly the kind of surprise that destroys trust in the engineer. Confirm this before the show, not during.

Ring out what you can before doors, and accept partial coverage. You will not get to ring out six wedges properly. Prioritize the lead vocal wedge, because it is the one carrying the most gain and the highest feedback risk, and give the rest a conservative starting level with a high-pass and a cut in the honk region around 500 Hz to 1 kHz as a blanket precaution.

Interpreting requests is a skill of its own, because performers describe symptoms in terms of solutions. "More me" during a loud section usually means the band got louder rather than that their level dropped, and adding level starts an arms race that ends in feedback. Often the correct response to "more me" is less of something else in that wedge, which achieves the same relative result without adding stage volume.

Respond decisively, not timidly. A performer gesturing for more and receiving a barely perceptible change will gesture four more times, get frustrated, and stop trusting you. Make a change large enough to be felt, watch for ring, and be ready to pull back. Decisive and corrected beats timid and repeated.

Prove the result

Watch the meters and the room for feedback you cannot hear directly. From FOH a wedge on the edge of ringing may be masked by the PA, and your first sign can be a strange resonance in the room rather than obvious squeal. If something sounds like it is developing a tone, pull the most likely wedge before diagnosing, because a feedback event in front of an audience costs more than a moment of a quiet monitor.

The structural fix, when a band can get there, is in-ear monitoring. It removes wedge feedback entirely, removes stage volume, and lets each performer have a detailed mix that does not affect anyone else. It also moves the difficulty rather than removing it, because a bad in-ear mix is more isolating and more disorienting than a bad wedge. But for a solo engineer covering both jobs, it is a genuine reduction in what you are fighting.
