What you are training
Frequency identification is the skill every EQ move depends on. A boost appears somewhere between 60 Hz and 12 kHz, and you name the band before you reach for a knob. Engineers who have it stop sweeping: they hear boxiness and go to 400 Hz, hear honk and go to 800 Hz, hear harshness and go to 3 kHz. Engineers who lack it sweep every band on every track and still miss the one that matters. This drill plays pink noise or a musical loop, applies a boost at one of the standard octave centres, and asks you to name it. Each round tells you what the target was and how far off you landed, in octaves, so the misses teach as much as the hits. Eight rounds is enough to find out which bands you already own and which ones still sound the same to you.
After this drill, the plan: Your first sessions drill the two bands you missed most, at half-octave precision, before widening to the full spectrum.
